Build Greener With Net-Zero SIPs

Homeowners save up to 60% on utility bills

Offering home and building owners up to 60% reduction on energy bills is just icing on the cake for builders and architects. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), the insulating foam used in SIPs, is one of the most effective thermal insulation availble in todays market. EPS foam has no nutritional value for plants, animals or micro-organisms, therfore it will not rot, decompose or decay and is highly resistant to mold and mildew. EPS will not decompose or decay and its R-Value will not decrease with age. Unlike batt insulation, there is no sagging or settling. EPS offers the lowest cost per unit of R-Value compared to any other insulation material. And because SIPs require no additional framing, thermal bridging is minimal.

Made from renewable resources

SIPs are made from thick EPS foam cores sandwiched between OSB (Oriented Strand Board) panel faces. The OSB is made from fast-growing trees, and produced in a way that yields a large percentage of every tree. The OSB used in our SIPs comes from suppliers who are are certified by the Forst Stewardship Council of Canada as managing thier forest land base and operations in an ecologically sustainable basis. The foam itself is made from partially-recycled material, and the final result is a building system that minimizes environmental cost, both today and for many years into the future.

Superior R-Values

The R-Values are similar to those of other products. R-value is a static measurement of the resistance to heat flow. Net-Zero SIPs have consistently outperformed other methods of construction in both whole wall R-value comparison and energy efficiency. The most dramatic results are the reports of the happy customers of Net-Zero, but there is also a significant level of scientific data as well. One of the best measures of energy efficiency of an entire wall assembly has been developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This testing method considers energy losses for the structural members, corners, joints and around windows, as well as, R- value of the insulation. What they found was that a typical 2x6 R20 wall had an average R value of somewhere between R12 anbd R14 in comparsion to a 6 inch SIP wall that has an average R value of approximately R24. That 42 percent better insulation value in the same sized wall.

The colder it gets, the warmer SIPs keep your building

The R-value of Net-Zero structural insulated panels, or SIPs, actually increases as it gets colder. As the difference between ambient air and air encapsulated in the EPS foam that forms the insulating core of our SIPs increases, the r-values increase. The practical implication is that the colder it gets, the more insulation value the foam has.  For example, one inch of Type I EPS foam, like what we use in our SIPs, has an R-value of 4.15 at 55 degrees F which increases to 4.8 when the ambient temperature drops to -25 degrees F. This amounts to an approximately 16 percent increase in R-value at -25 in comparison to + 55 degrees F - How convenient is that?

Less jobsite waste than buildings framed with dimensional lumber

Job-ready SIPs allow installers to install the roof, wall and floor panels without the need to cut, frame and trim excessive amounts of lumber and other materials. The job-ready feature of Net-Zero SIPs panels reduces the amount of jobsite material waste by 60% when compared to buildings constructed with regular dimensional lumber and framing materials. Less waste is obviously better for our environment.

Exceptional indoor air quality and temperature control

Net-Zero SIPs are manufactered using formeldyhude free resins and are assembled using low-VOC adhesives and sealing foam. The EPS foam used in SIPs has no nutritional value for plants, animals or micro-organisms, therfore it will not rot, decompose or decay and is highly resistant to mold and mildew. Mold problems are virually eliminated.

When compared to buildings framed with dimensional lumber, Net-Zero's large SIPs cover greater surfaces with far less gaps in the walls and roofs, to be filled and sealed, offering home and building owners better indoor air quality, reduced infiltration of outside pollutants, smaller HVAC systems needs and superior indoor temperature control. Net-Zero homes and buildings stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than buildings framed with dimensional lumber.
